Dual-Socket EV Charging for a Newport Housing Development at Ringland

Four two-socket charging pedestals now serve a Hedyn site at Ringland in Newport, next to the association's own Ringland office, giving up to eight vehicles a charge at once with dynamic load balancing build in to share the available supply across the bays.

About the client

Hedyn is the housing association formed in April 2025 from the merger of Melin Homes and Newport City Homes. It provides homes and services to residents across Newport and the wider south-east Wales region, and continues to build and regenerate housing across the city, including Ringland where it also runs a local office.

The chargers sit at Ringland in the parade next to Hedyn's own local office, so the association wanted charging in place at the site, set up to run several bays from one shared supply without overloading it.

Our solution

We installed four Rolec BasicCharge pedestals across the site, each carrying two Type 2 charging sockets, so up to eight vehicles can charge at the same time from a compact footprint. The units run on a three-phase supply and deliver up to 22kW per socket, giving a faster charge than a standard 7kW home unit for vehicles that can take it.

The pedestals share one incoming supply through dynamic load balancing, which spreads the available power across whichever bays are in use rather than fixing a limit to each post. That keeps the site within its supply capacity at busy times without cutting the number of usable bays.

Each pedestal uses built-in PME fault detection, so no separate earth rod was needed, and every charger circuit is protected by its own RCD and surge protection inside the post. The pedestals also carry an integrated LED amenity light in the head, adding visibility around the bays after dark. All four units were installed, inspected and tested to BS 7671 and energised in November 2025.
